Techpal Onion: Spice of Love

Everyone of us can feel the excitement and the warm love when we mention: “Fat meat, pickled onions, red parallel sentences. / New Year pole, strings of firecrackers, green banh Chung.” These are the characteristic flavors of the traditional Vietnamese Lunar New Year. And purple onion (also known as dried onion, onion) is a special ingredient that appears both directly (as a side dish, “pickled onion”) and indirectly (as an ingredient in making banh Chung filling).

Onions not only appear in festive occasions but also in every daily meal of Vietnamese families, simple yet very familiar. It is a spice that enhances the flavor of the dish, reducing the strong smell of meat, creating the unique taste of the dish, and expressing the personal style of each cook. We can mention dishes such as pickled sweet onions, sliced onions with salt, fried sliced onions with fat, onion powder marinated with food, …

Onions contain many nutrients such as vitamin C, vitamin B6, biotin, folic acid, chromium, calcium, and good fiber for health. In addition, we cannot ignore 10 amazing benefits such as improving cardiovascular health, treating respiratory problems, controlling blood pressure, preventing cancer, anti-inflammatory and anti-infective, good for the liver, preventing anemia, reducing fever and cold symptoms, good for diabetes patients, deodorizing and repelling insects.

“I was born in a suburban village of Hanoi that has a tradition of growing vegetables. I have eaten many types of onions, but none of them are as fragrant and delicious as the onions of the Khmer people in Vinh Hai (Vinh Chau, Soc Trang).

These onions are grown on both sandy and fertile soil. Onions grown on sandy soil are less purple than those grown on fertile soil, but they are still very fragrant and sweet. If you drink traditional medicine with the local people and eat raw onion with vinegar, you won’t forget the taste. Not to mention the traditional dish of onion soaked in fish sauce, stir-fried onion with shrimp, boiled onion…”

Purple onions are grown in many regions, but the outstanding differences in taste (as perceived by consumers) and quality (measured by scientific technology) must include “Vinh Chau purple onion”, a prominent specialty of Soc Trang province. Purple onions are grown in 7 out of 10 communes and wards of Vinh Chau district, accounting for 93% of the total specialized land area of purple onions and rice-maize rotation in Vinh Chau. The area of onion cultivation reaches up to 6,500 hectares, with a yield of nearly 20 tons per hectare. Cultivating purple onions is a traditional agricultural activity and contributes to the income of the local people.

Vinh Chau purple onions have sensory and taste characteristics that differ from those of purple onions from other regions in the country: they have a light red or purple color, a smooth and silky outer layer, a round and slightly elongated shape, a pungent taste but not a harsh smell. After being harvested and dried, onions can be stored naturally for a long time, up to 6 months, without any preservatives, while maintaining their quality.

The unique characteristics of Vinh Chau purple onions are due to the natural conditions of the geographic region that are suitable for the growth of purple onion plants, as well as the accumulated experience in cultivation and processing by the local people. With these advantages, the Vinh Chau purple onion product was granted a geographical indication registration certificate by the Intellectual Property Office, under Decision No. 2665/QD-SHTT. This is an important legal basis for businesses and producers to enhance their reputation, develop the market, and protect the quality and origin values of the product for consumers.

Freshly harvested Vinh Chau purple onions

The purple onion from Vinh Chau not only has a rich cultural color but also conveys warm feelings of love. The purple onion is a spice that enhances the taste and richness of food, and thereby contributes to making delicious meals for all family members to gather, bond, and strengthen family ties. With its health benefits, the purple onion is a deeply emotional gift sent to loved ones in place of many well-wishes. It is also a sharing of culinary culture and cultural messages of regions and ethnic groups. What could be more wonderful than giving loved ones a product from Vinh Chau purple onion, containing in its loyal purple color and pungent taste of onions, feelings of love, longing for reunions, wishes for health, and the cultural colors of the South.

In recent years, due to the effects of harvesting, transportation, climate change, and disease, the Vinh Chau purple onion has been severely affected. The plummeting prices have caused many difficulties for onion growers in terms of consumption. Therefore, a new sustainable and long-term direction is needed for this agricultural product.

The meanings of Vinh Chau purple onion in food, health, culture, and the desire to fulfill the mission of the enterprise in local socio-economic development have become strong motivations that encourage TECHPAL Group to invest in a Vinh Chau purple onion production plant under the TECHPAL Onion brand. The goal is to provide a sustainable direction, address the initial difficulties for the Vinh Chau purple onion, and help the Khmer ethnic group and people in this area have stable income, continue to maintain, preserve and develop this special agricultural product that nature favors. TECHPAL Group wants to maximize advanced technologies in the Vinh Chau purple onion production process to create a diverse range of products that meet market demand, while maintaining the valuable nutrients in the onion, ensuring quality and consumer safety.

The TECHPAL Onion brand will bring the Vinh Chau purple onion, a spice rich in culinary culture and health benefits, to domestic and international customers.
